Sudbury has its first female deputy police chief.

Sheilah Weber, who will take over from retiring deputy Al Lekun in the new year, also made history in 2014 when she was the first woman elevated by Greater Sudbury Police to the role of superintendent.

“I’m very excited, and feel truly honoured and privileged to have been selected,” said Supt. Weber on Wednesday evening, after her promotion was announced at a meeting of the police services board.

“I’ve learned so much from the chief over the last four years as a superintendent, working alongside him,” she said. “And I’m looking forward to furthering the progressive and innovative work that’s being done in Sudbury already.”
