If pressed, Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale would likely admit, albeit grudgingly, that there’s a fair-to-medium chance his government’s much-touted overhaul of Canada’s firearms laws won’t make it to the legislative finish line before the next election, as reported by iPolitics’ own Tim Naumetz.

The question of gun control is, after all, a perennially contentious one, and this particular proposal has been the object of fast and furious lobbying from both the pro- and anti- corners. The competing campaigns are only increasing in intensity, now the legislation is before the Senate, where Independent senators unaligned with any party caucus now effectively control the chamber, giving them the power to amend — or even defeat — government bills as they see fit.
